Review on Thule Aspect DSLR Backpack Black by Tom Tucker

Revainrating 3 out of 5

Almost, but not quite.

I have been using a Thule crossover backpack since 2012 and am very impressed with the build quality, design and comfort of this bag. When I ordered the Thule Aspect DSLR case I expected the same quality, design and features that I expect from my Thule Crossover. I had three different camera backpacks. I'm always looking for an overseas backpack with a hip belt, laptop, iPad and camera compartments as well as the usual travel essentials. I had a LowePro Fastpack 350, a Kata KT 3 in 1 Sling Backpack and a Lowepro Photo Sport BP 300 AW II. I still have the Photo Sport and use it as an adventure backpack when I'm not out with my laptop. I chose the Thule Aspect DSLR because it can hold my 15" Macbook Pro, iPad and other photography gear for long trips abroad. Side access to my camera is an added feature that makes it easier to access my camera and to store it. At first glance, the Aspect DSLR met my expectations. The backpack has a well-designed back panel, high-quality materials, stitching and zippers, as well as comfortable shoulder straps and a waist belt. The workmanship and material quality of this bag is excellent. The problems started when when I started adjusting the bezels in the storage area of the camera. The storage area is spacious and well padded which is a plus. But that's where the good reviews end. Dividers are not the right size. They leave too much free space in the storage area. Also, they fit the velcro straps not good.I struggled with these panels to fit my gear oh no success. I have placed the bag several times and come back with another solution but to no avail. I usually carry three lenses, a DSLR body and a hard drive or two. Plates fall off and my gear bangs against itself. I had to be careful opening the side panel for fear my camera would fall out, it just wouldn't show that it was in place. I tried several configurations but nothing stayed in place. I'm torn because I want this bag to please me. There are a few other small design flaws that I could live with if camera storage wasn't such an issue. A hip belt with zip pockets on both sides would have been better. Elastic fabric is short-lived (previous experience) and easily snags. The vertical laptop zipper annoys me, but I can live with that. A top zip compartment would be more secure. Disappointed, I am sending the bag back. Pros: + Quality construction and materials + Sturdy and comfortable back panel + Comfortable shoulder straps and hip belt + Plenty of storage space. ) - The hip belt pockets are made of elastic fabric. Needs zip pockets. Laptop compartment with vertical zip. The set does not include a rain cover. If these issues can be fixed in future projects, this will be a great product. In the meantime I will return the bag and continue my search for the perfect bag for my travels.
