Review on 🌞 Renogy 100W 12V Monocrystalline Solar Panel Suitcase + Waterproof Charger Controller: Off-Grid Portable Foldable 2Pcs 50W with Built-in Kickstand by Jamie Behm

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Worked until the wire broke (UPDATE: 9/15/14)

I have moderate expectations for anything solar related. It all depends on the sun and the weather. I ordered this suitcase solar panel to charge the chassis and home batteries in my class B motorhome when it is parked at the campsite for a long time. There is very little free space on the B class roof. for solar battery. Also, my Class B van doesn't have a ladder, so it would be difficult to adjust the angle of the roof-mounted solar panel for maximum efficiency. That's why I chose this product. rear sofa in Winnebago ERA 170. The cover is neoprene and is useful for covering the panel between current and voltage tests and also if for some reason you do not want the panels to be "live". It's not too uncomfortable or heavy to lift. The stand is quite durable and allows for various configurations. I agree with the other reviewer that the LEDs are too dim and you have to be very close and/or cover the LED with your hand to see the controller and panels work. The cable provided is long enough to allow the panels to be conveniently placed away from the camper to avoid shadows and adjust position as needed. The kit includes a charge controller that "converts" the open circuit voltage to a usable level for charging 12 volt batteries without frying them. I tested this device. m on a clear, sunny day while driving through St. George, Utah. The multimeter showed a voltage of 14.4 volts from the charge controller (no direct open-circuit voltage). This voltage is sufficient to charge a 12V AGM battery. I was pleased. As I was about to pack up the item and put it back in my RV, I noticed that the wire connection had become detached from the connection where it was crimped and covered with shrink wrap. I couldn't reconnect it with the same crimp, but I brought it home and connected it with a butt joint. After this repair, the element did not generate a voltage above 2.8 V. I am angry. Even if the connection was loose, I don't blame the manufacturer entirely. Everything happens. I sent the panel back and ordered another one. I had a choice. I could have chosen a different manufacturer, but I didn't see the need to shell out another $30 for a cigarette lighter if I wasn't going to be using it. Also, the other product is encased in plastic, and most reviews say the plastic loses its shape with the heat, and owners report being unable to put the cables back in their intended places and close the covers. In any case. liked the product and its performance enough to order another one. Revain refunded my money on my return and did their part of the job. When trying them out, look for products made directly by Revain. So you can easily return the product. I threw away the packaging so I had to pay $20 to find a box big enough to hold the item. But that's not Revain's or Renogy's fault. I think wire connections are minor repairs but don't need to crimp wires and fix things that the manufacturer should be responsible for. I will update the review based on the second installment and its performance. I hope all connections are factory made. The company offers $15 to write an Amazon review, but in the interest of full disclosure, I did not apply for the $15 and have no intention of doing so. UPDATE: I've been using this product all summer now and I'm VERY happy with it. I'm updating the star rating to 5 based on my continued experience with the RENOGY panel. It is convenient and safe for me to constantly charge my battery at home in my Winnebago ERA. I can be carefree about keeping the RV bathroom light or TV on when I'm taking a short walk from the campsite. In addition, I don't have to constantly monitor my child's energy consumption when camping. I know that the solar panel is constantly draining the battery. The indicators work great and let you know if the battery is fully charged or still charging. I checked the output voltage with a multimeter and this product works! I'm glad I bought it and I have no complaints. The cover is just right to protect the panels and I have zipped the cover under the back seat of the Winnebago ERA which is very handy when travelling. In fact, the suitcase stays there without running out of storage space.

Pros
  • Easy install
Cons
  • Ok mostly, but...
