, pocket watch compass/sundial. This works very well. Sundial and compass work well. This beautiful unit arrived in perfect condition and was packaged very well. His leather case is very well made from good durable leather. The small company that makes them employs just five people. We can say that they are real metal artists. Each piece is handcrafted from heavy duty, durable brass and each piece is very well finished. Here's how it works: 1. Place this sundial/compass on a flat spot in the sun. I use an outdoor picnic table to lay it out.2. Push the button that looks like a watch crown. The spring-loaded top opens.3. Rotate the sundial/compass until the compass needle on the inside of the sundial/compass points north4. Close the top of the sundial/compass, being careful not to rotate it, and change the setting to north.5. Now very carefully lift the handle of the sundial until it points vertically upwards. (Or you can pull the lever on the sundial before opening the lid) 6. Notice the shadow of the sundial's hand on the sundial's face. The number the shadow is set to is the time of day. For example, when the shadow of a sundial's hand covers the number II (Roman numeral 2) on a sundial's face, it is two o'clock in the afternoon. (It doesn't work at night, no sun, you know) If you don't know Roman numerals then I is one, II is two, III is three, IV is four, V is five, VI is six, VII is seven, VIII is eight, IX nine, X ten, XI eleven and XII twelve. Included with the compass was a small extra gift as well as a nice note from its creator thanking you for purchasing his work and telling you about the small company. This item is beautiful and perfect for displaying because it looks aged or because it is so well made and durable that it can be used for hiking, camping, metal detecting, etc. I highly recommend this item.
