Review on Gorilla Automotive 21182HT Diameter Chrome by Ricky Pee

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Well. Notes best in Accessories and Parts

I recently ordered a new Gorilla 21182HT kit for a new project. I have another set that has been used for 7 years / 45,000 miles on a real SUV that has actually experienced some abusive off-road conditions. I had no problems with my old set and they are still in use. The reason I mention my old set is because the set I recently bought is identical to the old set in every way. In other words, it isn't. It looks like Gorilla has followed the same path as many other aftermarket manufacturers, downgrading quality to maximize profit at the expense of consumers. Advantages: - Good durability. Torque meets OEM specs (119 lb-ft for my application) with no stripping or warping. Durable finish. No rust or peeling in 7 years under various conditions. From SW dessert to NE snow, including some road salt exposure. Branded products and they all had some imperfections, usually in the surface finish, be it peeling, chipping or rusting. After 7 years I still haven't had a single problem with it. To be honest, I still can't believe there wasn't even a hint of rust on these things, let alone chipping, flaking or peeling. Recommendation: Based on my experience with this product, I can recommend it unreservedly. While you can find a cheaper alternative, I doubt it's of the same quality. Regarding the adapter, the only thing I would like to note is that several reviewers have stated that the adapter is anodized. Maybe they got anodized adapters, maybe they didn't. (I don't think so. I think they're just confusing anodizing with Parkerizing.) Both of my adapters (new adapter and 7 year old adapter) have been parkerized and there is a significant difference between parkerized and anodized. Phosphate coating, anodizing gives an oxide coating. Parkerizing is an older surface finishing process that was commonly used on many iron parts in the automotive, transportation, firearms, tooling and other industries and is slowly fading from the mainstream due to its high cost, danger and one significant disadvantage. Parkerized finishes are prone to rust if not properly cared for. Parkerized parts must be lubricated with oil. Parkerized surfaces actually have some porosity that allows for liquid saturation. So unless they are soaked in oil, they will rust.
