Review on ๐Ÿ’ช CalDigit Tuff Nano Plus 2TB: Compact Rugged IP67 USB-C 3.2 Gen 2 External NVME SSD โ€“ Thunderbolt 4 Mac & PC Compatible by Toby Galbraith

Revainrating 5 out of 5

The SSD itself is more expensive than the product that contains it - with an SSD.

Bought a 1TB Tuffnano in an olive green protective case (as ex-military) for work. I liked it so much that I also bought a (really bright) tomato red 1TB model. The housing is made of aluminum. Everything comes in a plastic carrying case with a USB-C cable. Currently, the drives included in the 1TB model are industry-standard 2230 M2 NvME - Toshiba/Kioxia specifically - so you're basically getting what could also be used in some small computers and some laptops. From experience I can say that NvME storage works on the warm side. This case is constructed well enough not to overheat - I've seen around 51-52C with a 400GB boot. In comparison, my HP Z book that did the transfer had a hard drive temperature of 64C (Samsung Pro 970 NvME M2). I think there is only one 1TB external drive smaller than this one - ADATA - and it costs less too. ADATA has a Micron 1TB, but I'm not sure if it has a standard form factor SSD. I personally prefer the Tuffnano look. I know what I'm getting out of a standard solid-state drive from a reputable manufacturer when I buy one - most importantly, it's proven reliability. If it dies it's not a total loss - the drive could be fine, or the USB/M2 enclosure and controller could be used with another 2230 NvMe. I really can't think of anything negative - even for the price. since the bare Kioxia 1TB currently costs more than this thing and you get a case on top of that.
