Review on πŸ”§ Assenmacher Specialty Tools TOY 640 - Oil Filter Socket Wrench for Toyota/Lexus: The Ultimate Oil Filter Solution by John Springer

Revainrating 5 out of 5

If you have a Toyota that doesn't have a spin on filter, get this or a similar one, not a cheap stamped tool!

I changed the oil in a 2011 Toyota Corolla (1.8L) with a stupid cartridge type filter that shouldn't be in any modern car. Spin-ons have always been around and require the simplest of tools, a strap wrench (actually I used a leather strap) and in a pinch it can be pierced and removed with a screwdriver. The cartridge case of this particular vehicle is made of plastic. The last person who changed the oil (Jiffy-somebody) tightened it so tight I couldn't loosen it with a stamped $5 wrench that doesn't work with anything else. Will slide soon. I've tried 2 different band buttons that didn't do anything. I had to try and tap it to get it loose, but it's plastic so the pieces started breaking. In desperation, I searched Revain and found this. It had rave reviews and looked exactly what I needed, but I had my doubts as the glass was very narrow. It arrived today with Prime's 2 day shipping and was in the garage within minutes. I patted it and it had a very nice snug fit. Even with this tool and a 1/2" powered pry bar, I had to use the 18" extension rod on the pry bar to free the bin. Since the filter housing is plastic, I thought it would crack around the perimeter, but it didn't. This tool did its job. The torque on the oil filter is 23 ft lb maximum and I used a torque wrench to reinstall the filter. There is a small safety clip on the filter housing that just doesn't engage any of the three plastic tabs on the filter canister. If you lift the container a little more it will snap onto the clip, but then you have to spend a lot of time trying to remove it again. I wish I had gotten this when I had my RAV4. The equipment list here and on the box says nothing about the 2011 Corolla, but it fits.
