I bought this scanner for a co-worker who enjoys listening to radio communications. I paid $89 through Revain and see it's a few dollars less today. Uniden makes good products. I had a programming question and they answered me very quickly and professionally. It's not that difficult to program or use if you already have a scanner. If you are new to scanners, you probably need to read the manual well. As I said, there is really good technical support. This scanner model covers the basics. However, it does not work at 800 MHz. This may be important in your region. 800 MHz is becoming more and more popular for all two-way radio links. Also, the radio is not digitally formatted. You will spend between $400 and $500 on one of these scanners. Some departments work digitally. My best advice before purchasing a scanner in your area is to see what is used in your area. The Internet is a good place to find information about radio. The FCC has a radio license website, but it's not user-friendly. I believe a slightly more expensive scanner (+$40) runs at 800MHz. This is a 100-channel scanner, which is more than enough for the average listener. I bought a 10 channel scanner 20 years ago and paid the same price then as I do now. It's also an AM FM radio as well as an alarm clock. I definitely recommend this model if you don't need 800MHz coverage.
