You can't kill this radio.

This is our 5th UV-82. I've personally been using the one I replaced for over 3 years with no problems. My wife and I are radio amateurs and have been using our Uv-82 for 16+ hours a day for over 3 years with no problems. I gave my old one to a teenager who we helped get his ham radio license and kept the new one for myself. Wherever we go, we carry our UV-82 with us. We've accessed repeaters up to 25 miles away using the included rubber cleat antenna. It's nice to have a 771 style antenna included, saving you the hassle of spending money on another antenna with a bit more range. We have dropped our old radios onto concrete and other hard surfaces many times with no ill effects. The only reason we buy new ones is so that the young man we helped passed the technician class operator exam and got his license we give him a UV-82 portable radio as a starting radio. We know this will serve you well for many years to come. When we connected to our homemade aluminum arrow antenna, we spoke to a friend who was camping out in his RV over 90 miles away using a repeater that was 60 miles away. Yes, and only 8 watts. We regularly participate in the ARES network using a repeater 35 miles away with either an optional 771 antenna, our cellular antenna on one of the vehicles, or our base station antenna. The UV-82 is the best entry-level radio you don't need to invest a lot of money in to get started in the world of amateur radio. Please remember that you must be tested and licensed as an amateur radio operator before you can transmit on this or any other amateur radio. You can listen to learn the lingo, but don't speak until you've passed the test and received an FCC callsign. You will not regret buying this radio.
