Review on 🚚 RS-840 RS840 Comet Antenna: Heavy Duty Truck/Hatchback Lip Mount with Lateral Support Tab - Low Profile, No Cable - Top Quality Solution by Matthew Thorndike

Really strong bracket, easy to modify for NMO, highly recommend

Installed on 2017 Toyota 4unner with Comet SBB-7 antenna and CK-3M5 NMO harness on passenger side. I'm very glad I bought this mount, although Comet and the supplier tried to talk me into a smaller mount and Comet support insisted it couldn't be modified for NMO cables. Local radio amateurs insisted they were wrong and anything else would pose a stability problem for my antenna. Comet was wrong, Hams was right so now I'm glad I bought it. Obviously, for stability reasons, the long SBB-7 antenna requires a wider clamping range of this bracket. It still wobbled a bit and obviously the smaller clip mark will wobble even more and wear down the hood metal and paint. for a secure hold. 4 stars for two reasons. The bent metal and set screws need to be longer. This would help keep the mount from wobbling as much, but more importantly, would allow it to clamp (inside) the hood's drip edge, allowing for better placement. The clamp screws interfere with this edge, making it difficult to find a place to clamp. Luckily for the 4runner, the distance from the edge of the hood to that edge varies, so I could mount it on the outside about 12 inches from the top (inside would be better). I would have preferred to mount it closer to the windshield so it was out of my line of sight, but this issue prevented that. Another reason is that Comet was supposed to make it as a kit and drill for the NMO like the RS-730 clamp (which has a less stable footprint) but they don't have it and so had to be tweaked.

Pros
  • Fixed mount CB radios
Cons
  • Low repairability
