I only change it because I feel like it
Keeps my filter element 5 times cleaner than without. I have a 30 gallon aquarium with 3 sunfish and a 10 inch chub and used to have to change the filter every week. Now I can live at least a month before it needs cleaning. I only change it because I feel I should. I bet it could last 2-3 months if I let it go.
