So I've sat embarrassingly long (probably months if not up to a year) with a slow shower drain. It wasn't that it didn't drain at all, it was just that it was very slow. I'm used to showering before the tub is filled with water. (I'm one of those nerds who found out that a bathtub typically fills up to 70 gallons of water, while the shower typically pours out 2.5 gallons per minute, depending on the showerhead and settings. So, FYI, you can take a little less than 30 minutes in the shower before I use more water than I do in the bath.) Look, I'm disastrously lazy. So, after a while, the hassle of cleaning up the huge mess that accumulates on the tub walls every time you shower overcame my natural laziness of doing nothing, so I first tried to solve the problem with a lazy drain cleaner: Drano. .Yes, I read that Drano is bad for whistling. But my laziness justified the possible damage. But Drano did *nothing*. Yes. So the first plan failed and I had to choose between buying drainage snakes or hiring a professional. If there's one thing I'm more than lazy about, it's total paranoia at being judged by outsiders. And I couldn't stand the tacit judgment of a plumber (much less the risk that that plumber might speak his judgment out loud!). So I searched a bit for cheap drain coils and found this. I usually like to read both the good and bad reviews to get a balanced perspective. I was concerned by some of the 1 star reviews stating that the drain snake could break in the pipe which will need professional help anyway. but in general there were not so many such reviews. got a kite. And they were effective! Disgustingly efficient. With little effort, they glide down the tube and suck up hairballs and dirt. I made sure to be very careful with it and the snake was very efficient (no need to try to hack or claw or anything). I *really* noticed that there were places where the original green plastic turned white at the hook points. It bothered me *a little* - stress *might* indicate weakness, so I could see if someone was being ruder, the snake might break in the pipe. Instead, if I were more careful I could probably afford to use some of the others that came in a 5 pack instead of using the same one so often - at this price point it's not that important to keep using it . .
