My last DMM had 30 switching positions. I had to pay close attention to the installation. I may have to adjust it several times before the display shows that all contacts are closed. I bought the Astro for the mechanical simplicity of autoranging. According to my voltage standard, the meter is very accurate. The live wire detector in my last meter was more reliable than the AC voltage reading. Astro is even better. As long as I turn the selector all the way to the right, the live wire glows brightly and beeps. When I press the function key to complete the selection, the live wire also lights up the display and says LIVE. Astro probe caps can prevent short circuit on the side of 20mm probe tip. If I need to open the entire tip, I slip the small cap into my pocket for safekeeping. The rubber case has a slot for a keyhole. Now I hang my meter by the back door where the cords don't get in the way, and I can tell right away if the meter is in the wrong place. Update: Turning on the meter to check DC voltage is so easy I don't even look. That's why I didn't see the warning light when trying to test a car battery with a red plug in the 10 amp socket. Over the years, the gauges I've bought have made fuses difficult to access, and they've been increasingly finicky about fuse ratings. The Astro lists a conventional 10A, 250V, 1/4" x 1-1/4" fuse. A 6 x 30mm fuse will also work. Of course I decided to go fast. The rubber cover comes off easily. I had to open the battery compartment. After unscrewing the four screws, the back was completely exposed. The circuitry was not damaged. The ease of replacing the fuse is a sign of a quality knife to me.
