It's much easier to see behind me when approaching a traffic light because the height of the shaft is covered by my shoulders. Compared to bar-end mirrors, they add bulk to the bike, but bar-end mirrors are usually hidden by the elbows, depending on handlebar height. It was the perfect compromise between looks, price and functionality.
