Review on ZyXEL WAC6503D-S: Advanced Dual Band 802.11ac Access Point with Smart Antennas for High-Density Environments by Trevor Blazis

Good access point for businesses with modern interiors

So far, so good. Bought this ZyXEL 2.4/5GHz 3x3 802.11AC AP (WAC6503D-S) as part of my home network upgrade. Last year I upgraded my Cisco ASA5505 to a ZyXEL ZyWALL 110 (as the ASA cannot handle my 300Mbps broadband connection) and based on my positive experience with ZyWALL I decided to consolidate my Cisco Aironet 1142 and Aironet 2602i, that have worked a lot and consume too much electricity. Is ZyXEL comparable to Cisco in terms of operating system and functionality? Of course not, but it's an order of magnitude higher than any other SOHO router/AP from vendors like Linksys, Netgear, ASUS, TPLink, etc. So far, I'm very happy with this configuration and the coverage the WAC6503D provides. S (I live in a small apartment so I get a pretty good signal everywhere). I think the device is quite expensive at $600, but it's not really your average cheap access point and it has some pretty impressive internal and software features for semi-enterprise classes. This access point does not necessarily need a ZyXEL firewall/router as it works independently. It's not too difficult to set up if you have some networking knowledge and a good GUI for it. ZyXEL's phone support is also impressive, at least since early 2016. Until I regret it.

Pros
  • ZyXEL One Network integration for easy setup, management and deployment
Cons
  • Almost never
