Review on ๐Ÿ“ถ Hawking HWDN1 Wireless-300N Network USB Dish Adapter: Ultimate Hi-Gain Performance by Jason Staggs

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Great adapter for non-beginners to computers.

I was temporarily away from my router and was struggling with signal drops, slow speeds, etc. Well I saw this product and thought it might be worth trying. To attempt. I'm getting a signal through a metal wall and about 120-150 feet away, so a fall and horrible signal is normal in every way. I didn't expect miracles from this adapter. Maybe a little better speed but I still thought there would be falls. Actually I was pretty shocked. Now I'm getting 24% signal strength, which doesn't sound like much, but my connection speed has quadrupled and I haven't had a single drop out. Pros: 1) Once you find the direction you are getting your signal from and pointing the adapter in that direction, the strength of the weak signal will improve. At least in my experience. 2) You can disable the built-in multi-directional WiFi on your laptop. This can actually generate a lot of heat if you are in a weak signal area and your built in adapter is always looking for a signal. 3) The configuration window for this adapter provides great information for those wondering how many packets they are discarding. had etc. and allows you to do some advanced settings. 4) Installing drivers and software was a breeze. 5) Works on Mac or Windows. I think it's a pro if you are a Mac user. I haven't seen anything about drivers for Linux, although I'm sure someone has created drivers for it. Cons: 1) Installation is a bit tedious. You need to understand how to disable the built-in adapter when using a laptop and the various basic network attributes that characterize and identify networks. 2) This is not a multi-directional adapter. You MUST know which direction your router is located and which direction your signal is coming from. If you're getting a signal, this probably isn't the best choice for you, and it shouldn't be. =p I wasn't expecting a multidirectional move so it wasn't a scam for me, but I could see how the general expectation might disappoint some. 3) This is less a scam than a misconception I've seen from people who don't understand wireless signals and their limitations. It's not a miracle worker. You can't sit 3 miles from a router, walk through 6 feet of hard steel, or anything else where the signal can't reach you and expect this adapter to work. OK, that's just stupid. 4) If you are using a multi-directional adapter and your signal is actually bouncing back to your computer from a direction other than directly from the router, you will need to play with the direction of the adapters. one piece. See above (non-multidirectional adapter). Verdict: This is a great adapter if you know a little about wireless networks and how signals work, and read the product description before deciding it's a marvel. Approach this purchase by understanding exactly what you are buying and assessing whether this purchase is right for you. I personally had it for about 4 hours and I like it. I usually move my laptop around to find a signal but it drops out and I have to move my laptop 10 times before my router's signal is strong enough to connect. I hope this helps anyone thinking about it. Purchase this adapter and will either help you decide if this is the right adapter for you or keep you from buying it and getting bad reviews for an otherwise great product. Current operating system: Windows Vista 64-bit SP 1. (I've read about some driver issues with an earlier model of this machine. I'm interested to hear if anyone has any problems with this one.)
