Don't buy a new filter! Just take one of these.
Aquaclear filters are by far my favourite. I panicked a bit when the impeller broke because I didn't want to buy a whole new filter. I stumbled across this and it fixed my filter in minutes. Sometimes a new filter will wear out until it cracks / forms a film on the impeller, but there was no noise with the new impeller. Even if your once-quiet filter suddenly makes a grinding noise, you need one of these. Now I have one on hand so I can replace it immediately when it wears out.
