Review on TP-Link 10GB PCIe Network Card (TX401) - 10 Gigabit Ethernet Network Adapter for Windows/Linux, Including CAT6A Ethernet Cable by Justin Spence

Revainrating 2 out of 5

Works great with Linux, ok with Windows 10, problems with Windows 11

Very happy with this card. (DISCLAIMER: When I talk about speeds in this review, I'm only referring to internet speeds, not in-network speeds) Pros: Everything worked fantastic on Linux with Pop!_OS. Just plug it in and get started, Linux will recognize it immediately. I'm supposed to get 1200 Mbps from Comcast, well I get consistent speeds of 1400 Mbps or more all the time. Very impressive. Mind you, I have a Comcast modem/router combo that supports these speeds with a 2.5Gb Ethernet port and CAT7 cables. I'm still trying to find a good switch to share the connection to my Netgear Wi-Fi 6 Orbi. Not so good: This card works great on Windows 10. I didn't have to install any special drivers or anything like that. However, the speed hardly reaches 1200 Mbit/s, mostly I only get about 1100 Mbit/s constantly, sometimes with successful speed tests a little over 1300 Mbit/s, but that is rare. In short, it could have worked better on Windows 10. I even tried installing the drivers from the manufacturer's website and honestly didn't notice any difference at all. In fact, Windows said it was the same version of the driver. I uninstalled the driver anyway and reinstalled the driver from the manufacturer's website, like I said, it didn't matter. Another minor annoyance I had when using the card with my previous modem (I've now replaced it with a Comcast XB7 gateway). . Sometimes, maybe 2 times a day, for some reason I would get a message from the browser, something like "Website not available, please check your internet connection". (I've tried Edge, Chrome, and Firefox, all with the same result), a simple page refresh fixed it immediately, but it's still annoying. I no longer have this problem, it could have been a problem with the previous modem. Now let's move on to Windows 11. (Yes, yes, I know it's not even out yet, but it will be very soon) I'm a Windows Insider and enjoy trying out pre-release versions of Windows. After installing Windows 11, I immediately see a sharp drop in internet speed with this card. It is constantly reduced by almost half. Again, it doesn't matter which driver I used. I also went into the advanced network settings and manually changed the adapter's "Link Speed" settings. I also enabled "Jumbo Packet" it made no difference. The speeds in Windows 11 are drastically reduced. Conclusion: This is an incredibly amazing product at a great price and will exceed most users' expectations. I will not be removing stars due to the above issues as they are most likely related to my particular setup etc. The problem with Windows 11 is also something I'm not complaining about since this card hasn't been made yet. to support it. It could also be an issue with Windows 11 itself and not the card. I just like to write about it here so that the manufacturer is aware of the issue in case they read this review. I would buy it again with great pleasure.

Pros
  • Consistent test results
Cons
  • Could have chosen a newer model
