Review on Capresso 485 05 10 Cup Programmable Thermal by Nicole Davis

Revainrating 2 out of 5

Not as good as the MT-500. Fit and finish were inadequate.

I have been using a Capresso MT-500 for about 15 years. They worked great, required little to no maintenance, made hot coffee, and lasted a long time. The newer MT-600 Plus is not as well made as the older MT-500. As with the other negative reviewers in these comments, my MT-600 does not have the thermograph drip spout properly aligned under the filter basket. Sweat, also the filter holder tends to pop out of the filter. I paid less than $80 for this device, so at least I didn't pay too much for it. I solved the filter problem by disassembling my old MT-500 for its filter holder. Which, as it turned out, solved the problem. Now it stays in and doesn't slide out. I also solved the crooked opening of the thermograph by placing half an old CD (possibly with Chinese writing) under the carafe to correct the angle of the carafe in relation to the drip filter basket. Now the angle is perfect. After a few weeks, the heating element is working properly and the coffee is delicious. The thermograph pours perfectly. Better than the old one. The only thing better than the older model. No drops. As long as the heating element lasts, I'm happy. However, the poor fit and finish of the MT-600 plus doesn't give me confidence that it will last as long as my other capressos. If this device fails, I'll only lose $78 and learn my lesson. Then I will continue to buy Bonavita. However, given that most coffee makers are now made in China, I'm not sure there are many options for less than $150. Maybe I'll go back to the future and go back to hand bottling (Chemex). I loved my coffee bags back in the 1970s. So much for progress. I'm not sure how long this new block will last.
