Shin splints are painful. These compression sleeves are designed to relieve pain and support your lower legs when you are on your feet for long periods of time. They do exactly that. I ordered S/M and they run quite small but I think the next size up would be too big. The idea is that they are tense to give support. There are grooves on one side of the compression stocking and smoother material on the other side. (See photos) It looks like the smooth side should be on the calf and the ribs on the rest of the calf. There were no instructions for it, but this is the only way to put it on properly. The material feels high quality and they don't seem to stretch easily. A good product.
