Review on πŸ’‘ Enhanced Performance Sunlite 40979 Par30 Short Dimmable: A Spotlight on Versatility and Dimming Abilities by Wanda Kolb

Good, economical replacement for Par30 sealed short filament bulbs

There are about 35 lightbulbs in our house and the whole room can generate quite a bit of heat. To help with this and save some money on our utility bills, I swapped incandescent bulbs and spotlights for several brands of par 30 shorts. This brand has served me well. However, as with most LEDs, dimming is not very suitable if you want your bulbs to take on an amber hue when dimmed. Why par 30 short? I have found these indentations to be much better in a lighter application. Longer bulbs or the more popular BR 30 bulbs can often hang too low in a fixture and create the glare people see when approaching the light source. When the can bin is set correctly, the par30 is not directly in view unless you are directly underneath. These Sunlite LEDs aren't headlights that produce a very narrow beam, but if you're looking for a wide spread light you might want the BR bulb that hangs below. I'm trying to use 2700k bulbs for all my indoor lighting - 3000k max. I've read that some people like it even colder than indoor kitchens/workspaces, but that's too harsh for me. In addition, cold light frequencies have been shown to disrupt circadian rhythms and can also permanently damage vision. I'm not an expert on color rendering (CRI) but to me these bulbs are good replacements for traditional incandescent bulbs and nobody seems smarter. I haven't attempted to measure the lifespan of these bulbs, but they last much longer compared to my experience with Home Depot's Ecosmart bulbs. I was disappointed with ecosmarts which seemed to have a few bad ones with limited life in every box of 6. Although I haven't tried them on a dimmer, I've tried other brands of LEDs on a dimmer and don't like them because they don't "warm up" but dim. They just become a dimmer white light. For applications such as the media room, I used the Philips "Warm Glow" which, when dimmed, appears to closely resemble a lightbulb. I believe this requires multiple colors of LEDs in the bulb that turn on depending on the power input and emit an amber glow when dimmed. To be clear these Sunlite bulbs will probably only dim, but it will be white/cold light when dimmed.

Pros
  • LONG LIFE: LED bulbs are expected to last up to 25,000 hours before needing replacement. That's 22.8 years of use! (Based on a three hour day)
Cons
