Review on Impressive IOGEAR USB 2.0 to Serial RS-232 Adapter: GUC232A – Unleash Seamless Serial Connectivity by Troy Gerhardt

Works with Garmin MapSource

The IOGEAR GUC232A can come in handy when you need a USB to RS-232 adapter with a short cable. I use it to work with older Garmin GPS navigators. They require a special serial cable (or at least a connector), so the USB to RS-232 adapter cable needs to be long enough to provide some strain relief (by preventing the entire three-port adapter and cable be connected to each other). . to your computer's USB port). Garmin MapSource 6.1 works fine with the GUC232A on Windows 10 Pro 64-bit (at least with the ATEN driver; see - in the RS-232 serial port. The driver software is questionable. I decided to see what Windows Update says instead After downloading the driver installer from IOGEAR, I just plugged in the GUC232A and found that Windows couldn't find a driver for it, then I used Device Manager to open the GUC232A properties dialog and found the (Not -) Driver update. This gave me the ATEN driver for a supposedly similar product. This is the driver I've been using with good results, except for one thing. At least with the ATEN driver, my GUC232A's status LED is blinking not when data is being transferred, but just stays on as long as it's plugged into a "live" USB port, I'd rather see data activity, so I have GUC232A_ver_1 .0.084.zip downloaded from IOGEAR website and sent to Viru sTotal and VirSCAN identified several possible false positives and one other "interesting" result. Quick Heal on VirSCAN reported "Trojan.Occamy". On the one hand, no other scanner found this, so it is most likely a false alarm. On the downside, it's a less common "detection" than the ones I'm more likely to see false positives for. more Use of the GUC232A status indicator. The ATEN driver is doing my data transfer, so I have no reason to dig any further.
