Review on Saris Bones 805 2 Bike Trunk by Hikeboy Ramey

Revainrating 4 out of 5

A solid choice for the casual rider

This is my second bike rack I've bought from Revain; I returned the first one (Allen Sports Aluminum Folding 1-Bike Rack: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00C45GW8S). The other didn't work with my 2014 Subaru Forester despite claims to the contrary; this one does, and well. Things I like: The lower legs sit on my bumper, which makes the whole thing more stable than pillars where all legs rest on vertical surfaces. I have a loading sill protector on my Forester, so scratches don't bother me. However, before assuming the pose, I make sure to clean the window where the top of the leg is. Once installed and properly fastened, it won't slip at all. Not at all. I tie the straps in knots as soon as I tighten them. The plastic straps that hold the bike in place do a very good job. I have old Specialized Crossroads and they fit really well. They've made it easy to tell which strap goes where: those with the largest hook go on top, those with the medium hook go on the sides, and those with the smallest hook go on the bottom. I can still open and close a tailgate with a luggage rack attached (but clearly not a bike). It's not very pretty, but doable. Things that are far from ideal: - I drive once or twice a week in good weather so I can't/can't leave that on my car all the time. time and it's a little painful to put on and take off. Probably no more than other suitcases I've seen, but the five minutes it takes to put them on and secure is five minutes when I'm not driving. The straps that go down the sides are pretty short for my Forester. ; The strap is barely enough to tie at least one knot. I love my knots. The top straps must be routed over the brake light. They certainly don't block it entirely, but I'd prefer if they didn't block anything at all. When the bike is on it blocks my rear view camera. This would likely be an issue with *any* bike rack, so it's certainly not a deal breaker, but I used to rely on that silly little camera to make sure I didn't hit munchkins when reversing - especially important in the park, where I drive. - I'm not happy that everything, screws and everything, is plastic. I've used it for most of the summer and it's been fine, but I'd probably go with the more expensive metal stand if I was going to be using it all the time, especially if I was going to be using my arms. around all the time (luckily I have room in my garage to just leave all the levers in place and not mess with the bolts at all other than checking them from time to time to make sure they are still tight) . I generally prefer a trailer bike rack. However, since my Forester doesn't have a trailer hitch (the next one will for that reason), I think this is the next best, relatively inexpensive option for those who don't need a heavy-duty rack.
