So I make VHS for digital things. This is a small LeBoen device (don't worry, it's made in China) that I use to take analog video and audio signals from a VHS deck and digitize them to the HDMI output. This device is truly vintage. Gamers"; to be able to connect their low-resolution analog game consoles to their high-resolution digital monitors and flat screens. I don't use it for this purpose, so I can't comment on how it performs for this purpose. Consistently high ratings indicate that it has a does a good job. The manual aspect ratio allows games to be projected as they "were once" on CRT TVs with a 4:3 aspect ratio.. I suspect the only thing worse than a VHS movie with an aspect ratio of 4:3 stretched to 16:9 is Space Invaders tease to fit the big screen. But I digress. Why I specifically bought this box is the manual selection of output aspect ratios. You can manually set the aspect ratio to 4:3 or 16:9 The "cost" of selecting an aspect ratio is that the box will only output 1080p The converter is a simple black box, no bigger than a deck of cards. There are two mechanical buttons on the top of the converter; one to select aspect ratio, the other to select #1 or #2 composite + audio input. The front panel has a power switch and a power jack for a USB 5V power supply. The converter comes with a RCA + Audio (Yellow, Red, White) composite cable (3ft) and a USB power cable (3ft). a supplied cell phone charger. The icing on the cake for choosing this widget was the consistently high ratings from others who bought it. they don't support 4:3. Trust me I've been watching. When you digitize your videocassette collection, most of the time those tapes were made in 4:3, so I don't want to convert them to 16:9; The conversion looks a bit strange anyway. So I want to keep the digital copies in their original 4:3 aspect ratio and dig for retro moments. Another reason selectable aspect ratios are useful has to do with the standalone HDMI capture recorder I use; It is an HDMI pass-through device. This means that the aspect ratio obtained is what it outputs and writes. It's actually quite a nifty device in its own right: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08LPSG8CY/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 So how does it work. Now, when you're talking about a $24 A/D video converter, I don't expect perfection. And if you look at it from that point of view, this device does not disappoint. In my setup, the LeBoen drives a Treaslin recorder, the output of which is routed to my desktop monitor. While the LeBoen converter gives a good signal for a very good recording, the main downside is the blurred image. You cannot take a raw MP4 video file and use it as is. But then I am not using the device for its intended purpose. Luckily, I can run the file with Open Broadcaster Software (OBS), a free, open-source video streaming software, to easily tweak the color, sharpness, and gamma settings and get a really good picture. That's why I gave it 4 stars for image quality; The color wash was very easy to fix and when it was done the picture was stunning even from the 1980s VHS perspective. And with a little image tweaking, I can transfer to a DVD or save to a flash drive. Overall, I'm very happy with the LeBoen converter, especially since I can control my viewing angle.
