I bought this so I can "fly" a kayak over the rafters of my garage. If you only need to lift 40 pounds, this poorly constructed piece is probably acceptable; I would never try to use it for more. The ratchet is misaligned and easily slips off the gear, meaning the load can drop drastically. I was able to improve its performance by adding spacers to the ratchet, but I don't think many other people would know how to do that. For lifting a very light weight, this is hardly acceptable. Buy something better and don't risk it.
