If you can't get 4k video from a Macbook, it's probably because HDMI doesn't carry 4k from Apple laptops. I bought this cable to connect to Thunderbolt2 ports from a 15" MBP and it works great. The same laptop does NOT output 4k through the built in HDMI port for some reason. Apple support can't explain why either. Tested on the new LG 27"4k (not the best device) and HP 27"4k and both only display 1080p no matter what. Note: The USB port of the new MBP 16 inch also needs a direct USB connection for the display. HDMI doesn't carry 4k video, even with a USB-C connector.
