Review on SanDisk Extreme Go 64GB USB 3.2 Type-A Flash Drive - SDCZ810-064G-G46 by Chris Parrott

Revainrating 3 out of 5

64GB version is slow and expensive, although 128 and 256GB are better (see details)

My main issue with the 64GB SanDisk Extreme Go USB 3.2 Type-A Flash Drive SDCZ810-064G-G46 is concurrency. You see, I like SanDisk products in general and have been buying them for almost two decades now. And the Extreme Go is a pretty good drive, but it does have a few issues with the 64GB version. The most obvious problem with the Extreme Go is the price. At $22, the 64GB model is the same price as the 128GB models from other top manufacturers (like Samsung). Lest you think I'm comparing apples and oranges, I'll just say that my search only included drives with the same data rate. And that's another problem. While the 256GB version of the Extreme Go has fast read and write speeds, the 64GB version has been capped at a write speed of 80MB/s. The 256GB version has triple the write speed (an impressive 240MB/s), largely due to the use of multiple NAND flash chips in parallel to increase throughput. The read speed is around 400 MB/s for the 64 GB model, which is very good. As for the rest of the impressions from the ride, they generally didn't affect me much in one direction or another. On the one hand, the retractable design means you don't have to remove the lid. On the other hand, due to the way the pawl works, assembly retraction is a problem. Also, pulling back doesn't really protect the USB-A connector from dirt getting in. The drive comes with SanDisk Drive Encryption. They had it a long time ago, but I don't see why you need it when BitLocker is standard on Windows. I really don't mind spending a little more for a brand I trust, so it's not a big issue for me. No, the poor write performance of the 64GB model is a deal breaker for me. It's not that the drive is bad, it's that the 64GB model's performance is too close to devices that are half the price, making it a terrible price. The fix is probably as simple as opting for the 128GB version of the SanDisk Extreme PRO instead (dropping the Extreme Go entirely).

Pros
  • Finally bought
Cons
  • The list will be long.
