After you have purchased this product, discard the cable that came with it. I couldn't get a steady speed until I connected it to the USB 3.1 Gen 2 SuperSpeed 10Gb/s cable I got from Monoprice (same great results with USB 4.0 at 500Mb/s read/write ). My problem is indeed with the JMS850 controller which tends to shut down due to the random file transfer load. I can move a few 5-10GB files, go away for a moment to do something else, and come back with a drive that the OS doesn't recognize. In this case I have to unplug the drive and plug it back in. I've checked the board and can't find anything wrong, my only suspicion is that there is an occasional short that justifies the drive's strange behavior. I shouldn't have as many problems if other drives I have that can support 5Gb/s on their controllers are stable.
