Review on Efficient Solar Charging With 80A MPPT Charge Controller - Ideal For AGM, Sealed & Lithium Batteries by Josh Lockhart

Works well, but limited adjustability, loud fan

I bought this charge controller for an off-grid solar system, to charge Lithium Iron Phosphate batteries. I found the settings not quite as precisely adjustable as I wanted for this battery chemistry. The controller is solid, with sizable lugs that easily accepted my 4 gauge battery tray cables. Setting it up was not too complicated, though I did have to search a couple times through the menu to find exactly the settings I wanted, and google was my friend on that count, as the instructions are less than overwhelming, lacking detailed information. The display was decent, and relatively easy to read. I did end up returning this cc though. The reason I eventually returned this cc was the fan noise. Whenever the output charging power exceeded 15 amps on a 12v system, the fan came on, even if the unit itself was not hot. The system is installed inside my tiny home yurt, and when the fan kicked on, it was not only annoying, but hearing tv, or other audio was challenging. The fan would turn on above the 15 amp threshold, then off again when clouds came along. A charge controller should be seen and not heard. It was very distracting. I suppose this would be a fine CC for Lead acid, or AGM batteries, as long as it was installed in a non-residential location, but the slightly lacking adjustments, and the fan noise was just a deal breaker. I wound up spending twice as much for a much better unit without a fan, and voltage adjustments in the hundredths of a volt range. My chosen replacement was the Victron 150v/100amp SmartSolar, and it hardly gets warm running 55 amps through it, and it has no fan.
