Review on πŸ”₯ Char-Griller 12-Inch Charcoal Grill Chimney Starter featuring Quick-Release Trigger by James Beird

Revainrating 4 out of 5

The disadvantages outweigh the advantages.

I already had a standard chimney starter but wanted this type of hatch for my specific grill. I have an Akorn Kamado which is an egg shaped deep grill. Loading charcoal into the Akorn can be cumbersome since you're working with a deep grill and can't place charcoal right in without making a mess. You could probably get around this problem with a shovel, but you still look like a clumsy commercial with sparks and shards flying everywhere. then left with a reasonably civilized pile of coals to work with; It's a lot less messy than the alternative of 4-6 inches of charcoal spurting out of the top of the starter. Just having more control over the coals as they exit the starter is a strong benefit for me. The disadvantages may be as follows: - The airflow of this device may not be as good as the "fixed" model, so the lighting time may take a little longer. - The sunroof often detaches from the cylinder, but is easy to reattach. If they could improve the hatch design to allow for more airflow and remain intact, that would warrant another star.
