I have a restored car that I rarely drive. but often enough to keep the battery connected. I connected this LCD to measure battery voltage using a quick disconnect battery cable with ring pins and attached the cable to the pins on my battery. The cable is long enough to extend about 6 inches in front of the battery, and the monitor rests on top of the coilover strut. Now when I want to check the battery level, all I have to do is press a button and I know immediately whether my battery starts the car or needs to be charged. The voltage gauge has red/amber and green LEDs showing the overall condition of the battery and the LCD shows me the exact output voltage. As soon as I start the car I also see that the alternator puts out about 14.2 volts so I can tell it's charging the battery. Great little tool, handy for permanent storage in the engine bay. It's not entirely true, but I also bought an Optima Yellow Top Deep Cycle battery that allows me to ride a little longer on a single charge if I forget. I know this isn't a typical use for a yellow top... but the deep cycle feature is perfect for this situation because if I'm very busy and forget to check it the battery voltage can drop well below what which would normally be disastrous, but I can still charge my battery. Last time the voltage dropped to 4.5 volts. For a typical starter battery, anything below 11.9 volts is considered completely dead, while 10.5 volts renders the battery "dead" and NOT rechargeable. I know because I have bought several batteries over the last few years. (Although in some cases there is a way to bring a dead battery back to life. Google it.) The last entry in my battery setup is what is draining the battery in the first place. Since the car is now an expensive commodity, I installed a VIPER remote start/alarm system with GPS. There is a setting in the Viper app that notifies me when the battery is low. (Low compared to normal starter battery standards, not deep cycle). So when my iPhone starts beeping me, I know it's time to charge this baby. The problem is solved.
