A small child would be embarrassed to assemble. But I assembled it before giving it to my 3 year old niece and she loved it. The detailing on the unicorns is really good considering how small they are (it's not sloppy). I wish they had cut a small hole in the plastic dome or wooden base so the cord to the bulbs doesn't get pinched. when you put the dome on. I carefully cut a small notch in the bottom edge of the dome and it worked. It would also be nice if the battery compartment was attached to the bottom of the flashlight itself rather than dangling from a cord as this is intended for children and young children love to carry things around. As another reviewer pointed out, the packaging looks cheap, like a dollar store item, making it less gift-worthy. I paid $23 and I think it was worth the price. It's very cute when the lights are on and with an older child you get the added value of letting them 'tinker'. The battery compartment containing 2 AA batteries is under the base, in the "finished product" so you can see how big it is.
