I bought this item hoping it would be easier to use than a regular hair donut. I feel there is still a lot to learn on this subject. It took me a few tries to roll up all the hair and spread it out in a bun. Having layers in your hair definitely makes this more difficult as your shorter strands will stick out or fall out when you coil them. I have very little hair, thin. I could just use a smaller bun maker (if I'm not using extensions). I like that there are two sizes listed, but I definitely think the larger one is for people with longer and/or thicker hair. The bun is made from the same material as a regular hair donut. The material grabs the hair and helps it stay in place. I have a feeling that this bun maker will let you straighten the hair around the piece a little faster than you could with a regular donut.
