They don't have anything special, the sticker on the back is a bit harder to remove, the "protective tape" and they basically just collect dirty air and trap substances that would normally be covered and flung in the fan blades. Every little thing helps I think. It keeps the fan blades clean and makes it easier to see when the fan blades need cleaning. This extra large "6 pack of 2" was cheaper than buying individual 2 packs. They seem to get very dirty after about 3 months of continuous fan use or 6 months of average fan use, YMMV.
