The ability to build your own operating system in a Linux environment is very useful for people who work with software that doesn't support Linux natively (e.g., Adobe products). Creating an OS image also supports creating images of other platforms such as MacOS, Microsoft Windows, etc. I am still unable to run any proprietary or non-free applications within my VM environments because they are not compatible with Linux's kernel. This can cause problems when using them in conjunction with our IT department. If you have specific needs regarding compatibility, then it may be worthwhile to look into alternatives like VirtualBox. We use this product extensively throughout the company while supporting VMware products at home.
