I still have my opinion on the lack of customer service at QNAP, but read to the end where I added my positive impression of my QNAP TS-431KX. After I stopped finding answers to my questions from QNAP or their useless user manuals. When I finished reading the user guide, I had many more questions than I started with. My worst experience with this was finding their "Contact Us" link. Not only was the email address provided hidden in the fine print, but my message returned with an error message stating that it either didn't exist or wasn't accepting incoming email. I was really alone with this setup, but luckily I have 35 years of computer experience. A day and a half later I received my NAS. It's not set up the way I want, but I can use it. The biggest hurdle for me was getting a default login password. The quick start guide says the default password is MAC address #1. After trying "MAC address #1" and failing, I realized it was a network address. I searched the entire closet until I found them. Once I figured out the password and was able to log into my NAS to log into areas of the QNAP support system that seemed inaccessible to me until I logged into QTS. Although I finally got it set up and moved 7.5TB to network drives, it's still too early to consider NAS. alone, it will take me at least a week to find out how I feel about this. But as far as I know, QNAP gets huge goosebumps for the support they don't provide. I've been a geek for 35 years. If you're looking for NAS and you're NOT very computer savvy and you don't know anyone who is, you'll probably prefer Synology, they seem to have a pretty good support site, at least compared to QNAP. Added 19.04. I've already spoken about my dissatisfaction with the training required to set up this NAS device. Now that I've installed it and it's working, I like it. Using the manual for reference after installation is much more helpful. It has a lot of specs that can be useful when setting it up. The main problem with the user manual is that it doesn't have enough words, pictures are used to get the message across. It would be nice if they included more than a short sentence explaining each image. Now for the NAS itself: although loading the disks took a long time, I loaded 7.5TB of them and instructed the NAS to check the integrity of every file along the way. Once this was done, I was surprised to find that it took no longer than backing up an 8TB WD Easy Store USB drive to an identical one. Now folders open so fast! 8TB Easy Stores used to frustrate me with how long it took to open a folder, even on the computer it was connected to. Opening an Access database opens as soon as I press enter. The database opens literally much faster from NAS drives than from a local 1TB data drive. It's not plug-and-play like the Easy Store, but if you're experienced at managing computers you'll get there a bit slower, but it's worth it. Especially since QNAP provides a good library of free apps to customize your NAS to your specific needs.
