The pestle could not touch the rim of the funnel because of its shape. This made it unusable for making apple butter. I used a dovetail saw and a wood scraper to remove just enough wood from just under the top of the ram. This fixed the problem and it worked great. I would have returned it but I had harvested my apple crop and it would have spoiled before even the best sieve arrived. So I cleaned it after I finished the last "cook". The tape that serves as a handle and fixes the funnel in the frame has come loose while drying! Instead of spot welds, it appears to have been glued on. Fundamental manufacturing defect! I can fix it with a hand drill and rivets. But I strongly advise against buying this product.
