I am an old pensioner, a real jack of all trades, a consummate craftsman. For many years I have used a heating element handle with screw-in brass tips and variable temperature control. Give it a try - and I'm so glad I did! Anyway, I unboxed it and (sigh!) read the manual before plugging anything. I then set it up and used the fine tuning potentiometer to set the upper and lower voltage limits - I took a sample of wood and started investigating the basic behavior of this type of pin. I was amazed at how much time the quick response of the springs saved and you don't have to spend impatient minutes waiting for it to heat up and cool down before judging the result of adjusting to the chosen temperature! On my first real project, I easily saved 50% or more overall project time compared to a screw-in brass tip. I like it! I also found it worth keeping my old pen as I have a few "stamps" that I will continue to use from time to time. Together these two different systems are an amazing combination! and you don't have to spend impatient minutes waiting for it to heat up and cool down before judging the results of tuning to the selected heat!
