I think most older kids will really enjoy this but this is not the set for the more serious artist. This gives a small selection of different types of watercolor media (dry, wet and pencil) and a young artist can feel really special with so much choice. Maybe think 8-14 for this age group, with best results somewhere in between. Younger children go out of their way to prevent the dry watercolors from mixing and the brushes are very small - best for fine lines and details that younger children are not ready for. Any person older than a teenager who wants to paint watercolors is likely to take the art more seriously and would be better suited to higher quality materials. Again, there is a rather limited color palette, especially with pencils. The tubes can be combined (and lightened and darkened with black and white) for a wider range of colors, and the dry palette has many colors, but the pencils only have the three primary colors and black. The paper that came with my kit was damaged on several sides and had a small tear, so that was a bit of a disappointment. Also, there are only three bows in the kit - a big deal. Overall not bad, but not top quality.
