This is actually a manufacturing defect. The toner "page count" is a hard stop, which means that if Brother wants to force you into buying a new cartridge, the printer will stop working, even if, as in my case, there were no signs of fading, streaking, or the like there are other signs. that there is even little toner, and even more no. Several other authors have said that you can reset the page number with a complex series of key presses. It's funny that you have to go through this and the advice is conflicting, but the following worked for me. I will NEVER buy Brother again. To reset the toner counter (it tells you it's gone long before it happens): - Open the front cover. leave it open -- Turn off the printer. -- Press and hold the start button while turning on the printer. -- Release both buttons 3 seconds after turning the printer back on. -- Press the "Start" key 9 times. -- The yellow LEDs light up. --Press the Go button 5 times. --Close the cover. Now reset the toner.
