Review on πŸ“» Dakota Alert M538-BS MURS Base Station - Multi Use Radio Service Transceiver with Adjustable Antenna and NO Relay Output by Brent Henderson

Revainrating 5 out of 5

An excellent alternative to a traditional intercom.

and workshop which is about 50 feet away (we don't always have cell phones). I've looked at more traditional intercoms that use AC power lines for transmission, but they seem to get equally bad reviews. The button you hold down during a call is the only control you need to use most of the time - MODE and arrow buttons to change channel, sub-channel and other settings - CALL button which beeps other devices for attention excite (the use of this button is optional) - MON button, which allows you to hear if someone else is transmitting on the current channel (it doesn't "listen" to other devices, instead you will hear if someone else is on a sub-channel sends) . on your channel - all i get is static. This feature doesn't seem very useful as the device already allows you to hear everyone on *your* channel and subchannel without pressing anything) In order for the devices to interact, all devices must be set to the same channel and subchannel (es are 5 channels and each channel has 38 sub-channels). To prevent accidentally changing the channel and sub-channel, you can easily lock them by pressing and holding the MODE button for a few seconds (and do the same to unlock them again). The sound quality isn't crystal clear, but it's acceptable, and the volume can be turned up high enough that I can hear it from anywhere in the house. The devices appear to be well made, except that the antenna is very loose at the pivot point; If you point it straight up, you'll just accidentally hit it and it could tip over. The only other (very minor) complaint I have is that the external power adapter plug is larger and heavier than most similar adapters. PS: To reduce the chance of interference, it's probably best to avoid channels 4 and 5, as these are the "blue dot" and "green dot" frequencies used by some companies.

Pros
  • Works up to 3 km. Even if you are up to 3km or more away from another MURS radio (line of sight, no blocking walls/poles), the M538-BS base station can still receive the signal.
Cons
  • Has been damaged
