Review on ๐Ÿ’พ Advanced RAID Utility Software: SoftRAID 5 by Suhas Payton

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Slow and very expensive!

Product is slow. I bought with SoftRaid 5.8.4 and SoftRaid 6 was in beta. They shipped but I asked them to return the item. I have not received the package and have not opened it. They flatly refused. Then, when SoftRaid 6, which is required for Big Sur, came out, I was charged $50 to upgrade. Now I had to upgrade to use it on Big Sur (which was my goal from the start). So I paid them and at the time I didn't have $220 plus tax. To make matters worse, when I got it and set up my raid, my performance was in the 300MB range (read and write) for three very fast 2.5" SSDs. This was on a 5-bay 10Gb/s Sabrent JBOD unit, got a QNAP Raid with slow 5400RPM drives (usually they go up to 120MB) and I got 550 reads, 300MB writes, ie I expected a lot, much better from my software raid with SoftRaid. Finally, these drives have a maximum read speed of 550, writes of 520+. When I tried to speak to tech support it was impossible and they used Covid as an excuse. Okay fine, but email support is of course much slower Several iterations (all via email) of disassembling a RAID I've built with various configurations and we always end up in the same place. Poor speed with SoftRaid. Windows 10 (which is on my Mac) and got decent numbers: 600 reads and 550 writes. true but decent. But back then I clearly wasn't using SoftRaid, I was using the Windows built-in Raid software, which isn't the best. But it works. Then, back on my Mac, I set up my three SSDs as Raid 0 using the Mac Raid Assistant. My speeds were excellent; 940 to write and 650 to read. This means that with the right software, the hardware can deliver 10 Gb/s. The Windows result and this result mean that the hardware can deliver great speeds if you use the right software. The tech kept trying to blame my hardware, talking about "delaying" my box. The guy works hard but his goal is to blame my hardware. I have an email from him clearly stating that he wanted to show me that my hardware was the problem. In that moment, after completing my raid many, many times, I realized that doing this to him was pointless. Now I've lost over $220 on SoftRaid and wish I had never bought it. And my $220 plus tax software purchase is sitting around because I'm not using it. My recommendation: don't buy it! From now on I will refrain from shopping at OWC in the future. (I've been their customer for over 10 years but no more). Absolute waste of time and money. I repeat, DO NOT BUY!
