These straws are perfect because yes they are made out of hard plastic so they are strong enough to stir a drink with ice but soft enough to withstand the to shorten length. I'm not sure how it works, but they can easily be trimmed with regular scissors. They are very big, but that's good because you can cut them however you want. They even provide a chart of how long you should cut it. I now have a whole range of sizes to fit all of my cup sizes. LOVE
