Review on Rhino-Rack Jeep Wrangler JL Unlimited 4 Door Hard Roof Rack/Bare Backbone 3 Base Mounting System - Internal Structure, Black by Ron Houston

Installation is daunting, but it's worth it

The system fits perfectly. Just make sure you buy the right model for your vehicle. I give the installation instructions 2 out of 10 points. Very cartoonish and generally confusing. What I really liked was the layout board. After unpacking, you place all the parts and details on the board and simply select the part you will work on. However, it would make a lot more sense if the parts were punched using a suitable breadboard. Installation is intimidating, requiring you to drill a total of 12 holes in the Jeep's fiberglass roof. I installed the ridge system when my top was on the Jeep, but I think it would be easier to install if you took the top off to drill and bolt on. Like having to screw yourself in, and the roll cage makes it difficult to install screws and washers (I dropped a few and lost washers). Another item that Rhino-Rack needs to change is after drilling the holes and before installing the hardware. Rhino-Rack recommends applying butyl putty around the holes to ensure waterproofing. This material forms a web and can get into unwanted places. I used FlexSeal which came in a small bottle. This way you don't buy a tube of butyl and a caulking gun for as little as you need. The Rhino rack should have a list of acceptable sealants (not necessarily from the manufacturer). There are several videos on the internet on how to install a backbone system and we strongly recommend that you watch them before and during the installation. .
