Extruded activated carbon is not as good as granular activated carbon, so it has lower filtration efficiency and needs to be replaced more often. However, it is slightly cheaper. This material is very dense and some pieces are up to 2 cm long. A permanently smaller grain size would be much better. Although listed as pre-washed, there is a lot of dust on it and needs rinsing before use. 6 pounds of this material is equivalent to about 40 ounces of granular material, which weighs much less. I use it in pet fountains. The advantage of this activated carbon is that the pieces are large/heavy and do not seep through the filter material over time like granulate cans. I can pack filters with less activated carbon and just replace them more often. This reduces bacterial growth and rids the water of charcoal bits.
