My 30+ year old B&D grinder is dead for good. I only use the grinder occasionally for specific projects like finishing raw wood furniture or crafting . Today I tried out my new Makita for the first time and finished two maple sticks that I made from a piece of maple that I had to chop down. I use precut 3M sandpaper. To get the most out of this sander I had to punch 8 holes in the sandpaper which holes allow fine sawdust to get into the dust bag. It takes about 2 seconds to punch perfect holes as Makita supplies a plastic press to get the job done. The bag catches part of the dust that passes through the stamps well, so the dust does not accumulate on the sandpaper during use. This increases the efficiency of the grinder to achieve the smoothest finish on the raw wood. This Makita is noticeably quieter than my old B&D. I don't need hearing protection, but I do wear a dust mask and goggles to keep very fine sawdust out of my eyes. This grinder did a great job of sharpening my wooden sticks. I went through coarse, medium, and fine sandpaper after preparing the word with a little planning and sanding the rough by hand. It has a button to lock the grinder in the "on" position, which I found very useful. I highly recommend it. I suggest you vacuum the bag and grinder after using the shop vacuum.
