Looked good out of the box but on the second use I copied about 7GB film from a 3.5 inch drive, the copy failed about halfway and now the device does not turn on at all, no LED and does not register on the computer. The power supply, which outputs a stable 12.28V, has tried 5 different drives, ALL of which still work fine with my 10 year old USB 2.0 adapter. Tried other known good 12V adapters - no change. There is no visible damage to the internal circuit board. The voltage regulator section (silver inductor and adjacent chip) heats up when connected, the drive does not spin. UPDATE: I noticed that the PSU cuts out when plugged in, indicating a short circuit. I connected it directly to my gaming PC's 12V 45A bus and the regulator IC started emitting smoke immediately. I then connected the power cable (still connected to the 12V PC) to my old USB2.0 adapter - it works fine.
