Review on Enhance Your Shimano Direct Mount Rear Derailleur with Wolf Tooth Components Lindarets GoatLink by Keith Iverson

Just the right tool to work on the 11-42 cassette on Shimano's new 10-speed front derailleur.

I was looking to upgrade my Shimano 9 speed to a 10 speed with an 11-42 cassette. This device is the perfect tool for that. You cannot fit a gear greater than 34 on a standard Shimano tire. Well, technically you could get 40 there by lengthening the B-bolt a bit, but then you have an overloaded derailleur running at a weird angle and with teeth. That's the right decision. The B screw does not need to be turned. This item works with modern Shimano derailleurs that have a detachable connection between the derailleur and dropout. I note that my ten year old Shimano 9 speed derailleur didn't have this removable link and so wouldn't work for it, but the new Shimano 10 speed derailleur I bought for this project did have this removable link. You simply unscrew the standard link and screw it on. that's all. BTW: I was debating whether to use a medium or long cage and finally decided on the long cage because the medium cage is too close to the maximum tolerance for 11-42 and therefore requires the correct chain size. Here are the specs from Shimano 2016 mountain bike derailleur datasheet. The maximum cassette gear is 34 (MTB)/27 (road) and the total capacity is 33 (MTB)/37 (road) and the largest cogs front and rear. You can still overload a system, but it will stall if you flip it. I got used to getting more chain tension but stopped because it's too easy to accidentally shift them and the new shadow shifters add extra tension.
