Review on πŸ’Ύ SAMSUNG 970 EVO SSD 1TB - M.2 NVMe Interface Internal Solid State Drive with V-NAND Technology, Black/Red by Matt Minette

Revainrating 1 out of 5

Great drive, terrible warranty/outage support.

I bought this CD just over a year ago and until recently I was happy with it and would give it 5 stars. However, I powered on my system (about two weeks ago) and got a SMART error saying the drive was going to fail soon and I should back up the data. After hours of troubleshooting, I was able to back up my data. only to find later that I can't erase my data from the failed drive. The drive is designed to put itself in a low-level read-only state to "protect" the data, which is great. However, there is no way to remove this "read-only" status to securely erase your data before submitting it for RMA. I work in IT and have tried everything from removing the read-only state of diskpart and writing /dev/zero to disk to using tools like nwipe, nothing seems to work. There is a lot of confidential information (financial, tax, social security numbers, etc. of mine and others) on my hard drive that I am responsible for. Samsung didn't help in this matter, the only suggestion they made was to use the "Secure Erase" tool in Samsung Magician, which fails with error 29. They insist that I sent the disc to proceed with the RMA but they have not received any help to remove the record lock they have implemented. So far, I've always recommended Samsung or M.2 SSDs to everyone I've spoken to (in person and online), although they're usually a bit more expensive. as competitors. This will not happen again. I have Samsung TVs, phones, drives, etc. I will not buy or recommend any other Samsung product. No one should ever be forced to choose between the privacy/security of their data and the right to warranty claims. This drive lock is no different from how Apple limited the performance of older iPhones. Both give themselves good motives ("protect data” or "save battery”), but that's not really what the consumer wants. Yes, data protection is good. However, there must be a consumer tool to unlock the device. and since none currently exist, sensitive data drives do not have to be returned for replacement when they fail. Since I can't securely erase the data, I can't send it. So I'm left with a $550 paperweight that isn't heavy enough to hold the paper. At best, I'll turn it into a $550 keychain. And no, your willing reply to a post won't make it any better. I already dealt with your "Customer Service" department, they didn't help.πŸ‘ŽπŸΌ Samsung. Step πŸ‘πŸΌ upπŸ‘πŸΌ upπŸ‘πŸΌ.
