Review on πŸ”Œ RiteAV - Outdoor Ethernet POE+ / RJ-45 Surge Protector (Shielded) for Thunder & Lightning Protection (Gigabyte) - Enhanced Networking Security Solution by Joe Drew

Revainrating 4 out of 5

The only negative so far is the total lack of documentation

It seems like a good product, I just installed my own. Before installation I opened and checked the insides (see pictures); I'm not an EEE but I have some electrical/electronic experience and it seemed well built to me: solid metal box, solidly assembled with 8 screws, easy to open with a screwdriver for inspection/maintenance/whatever, circuit board made out of Fiberglass instead of the cheaper phenolite, and the solders felt strong and well made. Looking closely at the board, I saw two 6KE68CA soldered through (big black chunks closer to the center). I did a little searching and found its data sheet, it should be "600W TRANSIENT VOLTAGE SUPPRESSOR" which is exactly what a high speed spark arrester should be. There are also 16 smaller soldered SMD parts, 8 for each RJ-45 connector, i.e. 1 for each of the 8 pins of the connector, all only labeled "M7". But couldn't figure out what it was. Running for about an hour: The ethernet error counters on the corresponding interface are still zero, so there are no problems. I bought this specifically for the metal box (I've seen plastic surge arresters catch fire and almost set the building on fire in the past so I'm not risking anything with the plastic) and so far I'm having a good time experience with it. I'll post again in a few months if anything comes up.
