So far I have not arrested anything

But until then I have no complaints. It stops from both directions, so there is no entry/exit - it can be installed either way. I wish the ground wire was thicker and the unit definitely doesn't seem waterproof to me. It's better than nothing, especially with wireless Internet radio so high above the house.

Pros
  • Nice
Cons
  • -

I bought some of these because I don't have fiber between buildings. Some of them still work, although I'm not sure if they've really been put to the test. But I recently lost 3 of them and 3 network switches that were supposed to protect them. Some comments give 5 stars and say "I hope this works".

Very good Ethernet protection device

This device protects all 8 pins of a Cat5 cable. I bought this to protect my system as I had a major strike that destroyed our cable box, router and distribution center and two internet ports on our PCs. This would really help protect my system from damage. The vents on the protector can drain but that should help protect my other gear.

Mandatory security

This is a nice and compact device that transmits POE and data without any problems. For that I give four stars. If Thor gets angry and kills me and that protector gives his life in the line of duty, I'll give him another star later. If something gets fried, I remove a few. The truth is that all of these gadgets are a leap of faith. Good luck to all of us in the coming summer storms. They seem to have gotten worse over the last few decades.

Lightning Strike Pic

I had 2 of these that were struck by lightning. I took both apart to see what the inside looks like. The surge protector on the left was in a metal box outside with other equipment that had been struck by lightning. The lightning went through the power lines in the box and destroyed everything in the metal box including the surge protector. It looks like the surge protector didn't take a direct hit. The suppressor on the right was in a remote location where the lightning went through theโ€ฆ

The only negative so far is the total lack of documentation

It seems like a good product, I just installed my own. Before installation I opened and checked the insides (see pictures); I'm not an EEE but I have some electrical/electronic experience and it seemed well built to me: solid metal box, solidly assembled with 8 screws, easy to open with a screwdriver for inspection/maintenance/whatever, circuit board made out of Fiberglass instead of the cheaper phenolite, and the solders felt strong and well made. Looking closely at the board, I saw twoโ€ฆ

Installed correctly seems a great product

I installed them about a year ago so far so good. I know they experienced numerous transients and close misses that I honestly thought I was at the end of - the hair stood on end on my arms, I heard a loud pop and winced - but the pop was a discharge tube in a coax switch triggering, anyway no headphones where I dug into the skull. If that discharge tube was loud enough for me to hear through my noise-cancelling headphones, then I must have been hit by a heck of a lot of back EMF - and my NICโ€ฆ
